In 1900, Vardon made more money playing golf than any other person on the planet. Spalding engaged Vardon for a tour in United States. The matches began on February 12 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and ended December 10 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He would play at new country clubs, in mountains and near seashores. Vardon lost at least 15 times over 80 or so matches. Opponents included three US Amateur champs and four of the first five US Open winners. His exhibition fee, arranged by Spalding, was $250. He outdistanced nearly every professional he played against. A 230-yard drive was breathtaking. Average drives of the day with the guttie were about 150 yards.56
